Cruz breaks school record for the second time this season
CHICAGO – Behind another record-setting performance from freshman Argeo Cruz (Immokalee,Fla./Immokalee), the FGCU men’s cross country team finished 21st in the 41-team field in the 38th annual the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. Western Ontario won the 8K race that took place on Chicago’s Montrose Beach.
“We set some personal records on the course today and overall I was proud of how the team performed,” said head coach Cassandra Harbin. “Jonathan (Lanning) bested his time and so did Chris (Rudloff). It was good to see them come out strong even with the weather conditions.”
Cruz broke the school record with a time of 26:06 for a 61st place finish out of 528 runners. His time is three seconds faster than his time at the Mt. Dew Invitational (Sept. 18) and becomes the top freshman time as well.
Sophomore Jonathan Lanning (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Military Academy) set a personal record with a time of 26:16 in the 8K race for an 84th-place finish. Senior Dino Bozzone (Auckland, New Zealand/University of Portland) clocked in at 26:41 to set the school’s senior record.
Freshmen Chris Rudloff (Ormond Beach, Fla./Mainland) and sophomore Matthew Crowe (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill HS/Brevard) rounded out the Eagles’ top finishers. Rudloff set a personal record with a time of 26:52, while Crowe crossed the finish line at 27:11.
The team will spend the rest of October preparing for the Atlantic Sun Championship on October 30 in Spartanburg, S.C. with tune-up meets at the Disney Invitational (Oct. 9) and Hatter Invitational (Oct. 15).
