TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Heading to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Saturday to compete at the NCAA Division I Cross Country South Regional hosted by Alabama, redshirt sophomore Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky) and classmate Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) represented the FGCU men's team for the first time at the 10K event held at the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course.
“The men competed very well at their first-ever regional event this morning,” said fourth-year head coach Cassandra Harbin. “Gilbert ran a really strong race and represented the Green and Blue very well at the event. I was pleased with the way both Gilbert and Argeo competed against the high level of competition today.”
Setting a new program record time at the 10K event, Chemaoi came across the finish line at the 33:01.7 mark to take 55th in the field of 159 runners. The previous mark was established during the 2006 season, when Mike Harney ran to a time of 34:20.0 at the NCAA Division II South Regional.
After supplying the Eagles’ top time in four of the six events this fall season, Cruz recorded a time of 33:34.3 on Saturday to place 83rd overall. The time was good for second place on the program’s all-time list.
With the top four individual runners advancing from the event, the 2011 fall season comes to completion for the pair of Eagles.
