FORT MYERS, Fla. – After finishing eighth at the league meet last season, the FGCU men’s cross country team was predicted to repeat that finish in 2012 Atlantic Sun Preseason poll, as voted on by the league coaches.
USC Upstate and Kennesaw State split the 10 available first-place votes, however USC Upstate garnered one more second place votes than KSU to account for the one-point advantage.
Two-time defending individual champion Gilbert Kemboi was selected as the Preseason Runner of the Year while the fan vote on Facebook handed ETSU's Filip Jalovy the Fan's Choice Preseason Runner of the Year.
Lipscomb sits third after placing four runners in the top-20, including senior Ashton Fisher, last season. ETSU and North Florida round out the top-five in the poll.
Nine of last year's 14 all-conference runners are slated to return including FGCU junior Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS), who was one of three unanimous selections last season.
The FGCU men’s team placed in the top 10 in every competition last fall, highlighted by a pair of second place finishes and a first place finish at the season-opening FGCU Invitational were they defeated in-state rival Miami. Leading the Eagles in each of the fall competitions, Cruz and redshirt junior Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky) made program history by representing the Green and Blue for the first time at the Division I NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Green and Blue open the first of six fall meets by hosting the FGCU Invitational on Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. at FGCU’s Buckingham Property. It will mark the second straight year the Eagles have opened with the event, as the men’s team finished in first place in the 4-mile event while the women’s team placed second in the 5K race last season. The men’s event will be an 8K race this season.
The Green and Blue are set to host the A-Sun Championship for the first time in program history this season, as the event gets underway on Saturday, October 27.
