FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU cross country teams will compete in their second race of the season Saturday when they travel to Gainesville, Fla. to run in the University of Florida Gator Invitational.
The men’s team will compete in the 8k which is scheduled to begin a 7:55 a.m. followed by the women’s 5k at 8:30 a.m.
This is the sixth straight year and eighth overall that FGCU has competed in this invitational. The men’s team finished seventh last year with junior Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) finishing 27th overall to lead the Eagles.
The women’s team placed ninth last season with senior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) leading the Eagles with a 32nd place finish.
The men’s top finish in the event was sixth back in 2010 and the women’s highest finish was seventh in 2007 and 2010.
Nine division I teams will compete at the event which include FAU, Northern Kentucky, UCF, North Florida, Miami, Stetson and Florida A&M.
FGCU last competed at the FGCU Invitational two weeks ago where the men’s team placed first and the women’s team placed second. Nova Southeastern, FAU, FIU and fellow A-Sun members Lipscomb and Stetson competed in the invitational as well.
On the men’s side, Cruz finished first overall in the FGCU Invite with a time of 26:00.2, and was the fourth fastest time in the 8k all-time at FGCU. Junior Chris Rudloff (Ormond Beach, Fla./Mainland HS) was right behind Cruz, finishing second with a time of 26:22.0, while sophomore Alexander Schilling (Dresden, Germany/Sportsgymnasium Dresden/Queens University of Charlotte) finished in sixth place with a time of 26:54.5. Senior Dillon McGee (Indiatlantic, Fla./Melbourne HS), freshman Cody Adkinson (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) and freshman Jean Deceus (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) occupied spots 7-9 to give FGCU five runners in the top 10.
For the women, junior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) led the Eagles, finishing second in the 5K race with a time of 18:16.5 while Cohen was second to finish in 10th overall with a time of 19:08.5. Perzanowski’s time was the third fastest in the 5k all-time at FGCU. Freshman Courtney Corradetti (San Diego, Ca./Vista HS) was right behind Cohen finishing in 11th with a time of 19:13.1. Sophomore Ali Wilbur (Saint James City, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) finished in 21st place with a time of 20:26.4 and junior Gretchen MacMillan (Ocala, Fla./West Port HS) came in at 20:37.8, good for 23rd place. Junior Caity Hoffman (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Magnus HS) and freshman Savanah Lacey (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo HS) finished back-to-back with times of 21:22.0 and 21:29.8 respectively.
