FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU will host the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Cross Country Championships this Saturday, Oct. 27 in Buckingham, Fla. The women’s 5K is scheduled to start 8:45 a.m. followed by the men’s 8K at 9:30 a.m.
This is the first time FGCU will have the honor of hosting, and the sixth time FGCU has ran in the A-Sun Championships.
The men’s cross country team has defeated several schools that are ranked in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region rankings. The Green and Blue defeated Chattanooga (No. 12), Mercer (No. 15) and previously ranked Lipscomb and Belmont at the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 29.
At last season’s Atlantic Sun Championship in Nashville, Tenn., junior Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) finished 25th with a time of 26:14.52. On the women’s side, senior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) finished 24th with a time of 18:44.40, followed by junior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) in 30th with a time of 19:05.50.
FGCU will look to improve upon last season’s results. Cruz has already set a program record in the 8K this season with a time of 25:20.64, good for 18th place at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic in September. He comes into this weekend ranked 10th out of 91 in the A-Sun men’s individual rankings.
For the women, Perzanowski is ranked 13th out of 100 in the A-Sun women’s individual rankings, after a second place finish at the FGCU Invitational back in August with a time of 18:16.5, which is third all-time at FGCU.
The men’s team has finished in the top 5 in four events this season, highlighted by a first place finish in the FGCU Invitational (Aug. 31). Cruz, senior Alexander Schilling (Dresden,Germany/Sportsgymnasium Dresden/Queens University of Charlotte) and junior Chris Rudloff (Ormond Beach, Fla./ Mainland) have been the top finishers in three out of the five events this season.
The women’s team has also finished in the top 5 in four events, highlighted by a second place finish at the FGCU Invitational. Perzanowski, Cohen and freshman Courtney Corradetti (San Diego, Ca./Vista HS) have been the top three finishers for FGCU all season. In the Eagles most recent outing at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge (Oct. 12), the men’s team finished third out of 11 teams in the 8K. Cruz led the team with a third place finish, in a time of 26:11.62. The women finished fifth out of 16 in the 6K with Perzanowski leading the Eagles with a 10th place finish in a time of 22:28.95, which was good for second all-time at FGCU.
Results and recaps from both races will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com at the conclusion of the event.
