MACON, Ga. – After taking fourth place and setting a program record at last Friday’s FSU Seminole Invitational, FGCU men’s cross country senior Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) earned his second Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Week honor, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The well-deserved award comes as a result of Cruz’s record-breaking performance in the men’s 8k at last Friday’s invitational in Tallahassee. Cruz crossed the finish line fourth in 24 minutes and 51.92 seconds to beat the former program record of 24:52.00, which he set earlier this season at the University of Florida’s Mountain Dew Invite. The senior led the Eagles for the third time this season, guiding them into a third-place finish, while outpacing every runner from A-Sun rival Jacksonville and FSU, a team which recently received votes in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.
Cruz has been a leader for the Green and Blue over his four seasons, earning the two best 8k times in program history, as well as eight of the top 10 times. In addition to holding the 8k program-record, the Immokalee, Fla. product also owns the top time for the 10k.
The only member of the FGCU men’s cross country team to ever earn the A-Sun’s weekly honor was first recognized during his sophomore year after placing seventh out of 214 at the 2011 Disney World Cross Country Classic. Racing the 8k in 25:55.75, Cruz’s time is still sketched in the record book ranking 10th.
Other conference honors for Cruz include being named one of three unanimous selections to the inaugural Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference team in 2011 and a member of the All-Freshmen team in 2010.
Traveling to Orlando, the Eagles are set to compete at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational on Friday evening at 6 p.m. It will be the Green and Blue’s final tune-up before competing at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Nov. 2. Results and recaps from the UCF Invite will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following the event.
