ORLANDO – For its final meet of the regular season, the FGCU cross country teams head to Orlando to compete in the UCF Black & Gold Invite on Friday. Racing through the university’s cross country course, the women’s 6k will take off at 5 p.m. followed by the men’s 8k at 5:45 p.m.
“The team is mentally and physically in a good place,” head coach Cassandra Goodson said. “We are resting a few key individuals coming off a good performance at FSU. This weekend is a nice chance to run a race close to home and give our young team some experience.”
Joining the Eagles to race this weekend are 11 other programs, including Bethune-Cookman, College of Charleston, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Johnson & Wales, Miami, Northwood, Rollins College, UCF and Atlantic Sun rivals North Florida and Stetson.
RECORD WRECKERS PT. 2
For the second time this season, seniors Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) and Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) have had record-setting performances in the same meet. At last week’s FSU Seminole Invite, Perzanowski set a 5k program-record of 17:36.88 while Cruz topped the 8k all-time list at 24:51.92, each replacing the former record they previously set. Their first record-wrecking meet was September’s Mountain Dew Invite held at the University of Florida.
Of the 11 teams FGCU is set to face this weekend, the Eagles have raced against eight of them this season. As both teams took home the top title at the Westminster Invitational, the men’s team raced past Miami, FAU and FIU, while the women beat Miami and FAU. In the Mountain Dew Invite the men finished ahead of FAU, FIU, Miami, Stetson, Northwood and Johnson & Wales, but were surpassed by UNF. In the same meet, the women outpaced Miami and Stetson but trailed FAU, UNF and UCF.
Representing FGCU in the women’s 6k are Stephanie Cajas (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS), Courtney Corradetti (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS), Alicen Wilbur (Pine Island, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS), Regan Farrow (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Howell HS), Emily Perkinson (Orlando, Fla./Colonial HS), Savannah Lacey (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo HS), Kelsey English (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township HS), Gretchen MacMillan (Ocala, Fla./West Port HS) and Amanda Restivo (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape HS).
Joining Cruz on the course this weekend are Nathan Kandie (Iten, Kenya/University of Arizona), Chris Rudloff (Ormond Beach, Fla./Mainland HS), Courtland Bernard (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota HS), Alex Delle Monache (Welland, Ontario/E.L. Crossley), Charles Bengtson (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard HS), Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky), Jean Deceus (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS), Aaron Rojas (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) and Jose Cartagena (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Estero HS).
After they return from Orlando, the Green and Blue will head to Nashville for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships on Nov. 2.
