Lamielle, Steele Finish 1-2 at Cougar Golf Invitational
COLUMBUS, GA – Junior Joey Lamielle and senior David Steele led Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team to a final-round total of 285 (-3) but the Eagles couldn’t catch defending Division II national champion USC-Aiken and finished second in the 2004 Cougar Invitational at Bull Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.
The Pacers also recorded a final-round total of 285 to hold off the Eagles by four shots. USC-Aiken wound up with a three-round total of 862, while FGCU finished second at 866.
Lamielle (Sarasota Booker) won medallist honors, edging out Steele (Bonita Springs/Estero) by three shots. Only four players shot par or better in the tournament. Lamielle carded rounds of 71-68-69 for a three-day total of 208, eight shots under par, while Steele went 72-71-68 for 211, five shots under par.
Sophomore Alister Munro (Holland) carded a 72 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 29th with a three-day total of 224. Junior Drew Pierson (Lockport, IL) finished in a tie for 40th with a 226 while sophomore Joe Hays (Walton, Kentucky) shot 230 and tied for 62nd.
Valdosta State followed Tuesday's tourney-low round of 283 with a 295 to finish in third place. Georgia College & State University was fourth, followed by Armstrong Atlantic State. Delta State and Barry tied for sixth, Pfeiffer was eighth, and Columbus State and UNC Pembroke tied for ninth, followed by Carson-Newman and Barton. Kennesaw State and West Georgia tied for 13th, followed by Presbyterian, Francis Marion, Clayton State, and North Greenville.
The Eagles will play at the Chico State Men's Invitational in Chico, Calif., beginning Monday.
