Saturday, February 13, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU Men’s Golf team will open the 2010 spring season by traveling to Houston, Texas for the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday, February 15. The three-round, 54-hole event will get underway with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start and the final round will conclude on Tuesday afternoon.

“The team is prepared and excited to get back on the course as we head to the Rice Intercollegiate. Our guys are determined to play even better than they did throughout the fall semester,” said assistant coach Brent Jensen. “The team has worked very hard this offseason and is eager to see it payoff as we open the spring portion of our schedule.”

The Eagles will take to the course with Auburn, Hartford, Houston, Houston Baptist, Kansas, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Miami, Missouri State, Nebraska, New Orleans, Northern Colorado, Pacific, and Rice. Defending champion, Pacific, won the 2009 Rice Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 874, finishing four strokes ahead of host Rice.

Westwood Golf Club, located just minutes from the Rice University campus will play host to this year’s Rice Intercollegiate. Westwood, originally founded in 1928 as Westwood Country Club, has the distinction of being the second oldest Private Golf Club in Houston on its original site. Westwood underwent major renovations beginning in 2002 and reopened for play in May of 2004 after a redesign by noted golf architect Keith Foster. Hardwood oaks, lakes and a natural ravine help shape and define the fairways and greens. The style of the course is reminiscent of many of the great courses constructed in the early 20th century — simple clean and classic.

The Eagles had a solid fall season, placing in the top five in five of their six tournaments. FGCU earned fifth place at Jim Colbert Intercollegiate (9/21/09) in Manhattan, Kan., followed by consecutive first place finishes at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate Tournament (10/1/09) in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. and at the FGCU Men’s Invitational (10/12/09) played at the West Bay Beach & Golf Club in Estero, Fla. The Blue and Green were in a battle for supremacy on the final day of the Bethune-Cookman Invitational Tournament (10/25/09) in Daytona Beach, Fla. but finished in second place at the conclusion of the final round. The Eagles ended the fall season on a high note with a record-setting first place finish, turning in an 851 (283-281-287), at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational Tournament (11/3/09) in Deland, Fla.

In addition to a strong team performance, the Eagles did very well on the individual leaderboard throughout the fall. Junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) lead the field of 65 at Mission Inn with a 209 (68-70-71) and Junior Josh Leppo (Naples, Fla.) tied for second place overall scoring a 212 (71-70-71). Senior Mike Hart (London, England) was atop the leaderboard of 28 with a 211 (69-70-72) at the conclusion of the three round outing at the FGCU Men’s Invitational. Sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) finished in a tie for second place at the Bethune-Cookman Invitational with a 214 (73-66-75) and sophomore Pat Williams (Toronto, Ontario) was the top individual at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational submitting a 210 (73-67-70) at the conclusion of the final round.
