Thursday, March 11, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s golf team will head to Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. on Friday for the 2010 Spring Fling Intercollegiate at Mission Inn Resort & Club’s El Campéon Golf Course. Teams tee off the opening round of the three-round event on Friday at 8 a.m.

The Eagles will square up against Appalachian State, Connecticut, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Illinois, Morehead State, Saint Leo, Stetson, Tampa, and tournament host St. John’s.

The par-71, 6,614-yard El Campéon Golf Course was also the site of the 2009 Mission Inn Intercollegiate, also hosted by the Red Storm in early October. The Eagles took first place out of 13 teams at the event, with a score of 864 (285-288-291). Junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) was the top individual out of 65 golfers with a score of 209 (68-70-71). The fall competition included St. John's, Stetson, Loyola, Savannah State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Rollins, Villanova, Appalachian State, Boston College, U.T. Pan American, and Western Kentucky.

Revered as one of Florida's finest, El Campeón was designed by George O'Neil in 1917 and further enhanced in 1926. With a 74.2 rating and a 135 slope, the course was ranked in the top 10 out of Florida's more than 1,400 courses.

The Blue and Green are coming of a sixth place finish at last weekend’s Don Benbow North-South Collegiate. In the field of 15, the Eagles submitted a two-round 592 (299-293), while Laval University took the 2010 title at the event, after turning in a team score of 573.

Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles in the last outing, tying for 10th on the individual leaderboard with a 145 (74-71). Turning in a two-round 146 (77-69), sophomore Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario) tied for 16th overall and fellow classmate Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) finished in a tie for 26th with a 149 (75-74).
