Monday, August 09, 2010
JUPITER, Fla. – FGCU men’s golf junior-to-be and local Fort Myers High School product Alex Medinis capped a strong summer by winning the 19th Florida State Amateur Match Play Championship this past weekend at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club & Spa in Jupiter, Fla.

Medinis earned the No. 25 seed in the 64-player bracket by carding a three-over par 75 in last Thursday’s seeding round. The Fort Myers, Fla. product then went on to win five matches in two days to advance to Sunday’s final. In the final, Medinis defeated Gabriel Costa in 14 holes, 5 and 4, after back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 to close the match.

When match play commenced on Friday, Medinis defeated Tory Henderson (2 and 1) from Bradenton and Alan Pope (1-up) of Orland to advance to the round of 16. Saturday also featured two wins for Medinis, including a 19-hole victory over Jason Burstyn of Miami, the tournament’s No. 9 seed. After playing 19 holes against Burstyn, Medinis defeated Doug Snoap (3 and 2) from Apopka. Medinis faced 2005 Champion Kelly Gosse from Ocala on Sunday morning and beat Gosse, 4 and 2, to face Costa in the final match.

More than 390 players attempted to qualify at one of seven sites across the state. In the qualifying, players competed in 18 holes of stroke play in hopes of reaching the Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club & Spa. The tournament title puts an end to Medinis’ summer that also included a tie for fifth at the Amateur Championship at Bay Hill Club & Lodge and a tie for third at the Amateur Public Links Championship at PGA Golf Club.

Medinis turned in a breakout sophomore campaign for the Eagles in 2009, ranking second on the team with a 73.9 stroke average. One of just two players to participate in all 11 tournaments, Medinis posted a pair of top-5 finishes and six top-10s. He closed the year with three consecutive top-10s, highlighted by a tie for ninth at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Championship.

Medinis is one of the four returning players from last year’s club that finished in the top-20 at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Championship in which FGCU finished in second place. Newly-appointed head coach Brent Jensen will lead a group of 10 returners that produced three tournament titles and seven top-5 finishes in 2009-10.
