TOURNEY PREVIEW: Men's Golf Set to Begin 10th Season
Friday, September 24, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The start of the 10th season of FGCU men’s golf will have a new look when first-year head coach Brent Jensen leads the Eagles into the John Dallio Memorial Tournament hosted by DePaul University at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Chicago.

The 54-hole tournament will run from Saturday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 26 with the 13-team field playing two rounds on the opening day beginning at 7 a.m. The teams will return to the par 72, 6,898-yard course for the final round on Sunday at 7:10 a.m.

During the opening 36 holes on Saturday, FGCU will be playing alongside the host Blue Demons and Detroit. The five players from the respective three schools will tee off from 8:03 a.m. to 8:39 a.m., ending with each team’s designated No. 1 player.

Live in-progress scoring of the tournament can be found at www.golfstat.com. The scores of each player will be updated every three holes. A link to the live scoring can be found by going to the FGCU men’s golf schedule and clicking on the day’s event or by going to www.GolfStat.com and searching for the John Dallio Memorial Tournament on the front page.

After serving as an assistant for two years under legendary golf instructor and the program’s only head coach over the first nine years in Dr. Jim Suttie, Jensen will welcome back a strong nucleus of players from the 2009-10 team that finished second at the Atlantic Sun Championships.

Three players from last year’s club that finished in the top-20 at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Championship earned a spot in this weekend’s starting five for FGCU. Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) along with juniors Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) and Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) will look to build off a strong end to 2010. Senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) and junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) also earned a trip to the “Windy City” by advancing through a three-round qualifier held by Jensen a few weeks ago.

Mazziotta and Medinis were the only two players on last year’s roster to participate in all 11 tournaments and 30 rounds, producing the team’s top two scoring averages at 73.1 and 73.9, respectively. Pena was the star of the 2010 A-Sun Championship for the Eagles, carding Conference Championship low single-round score with a seven-under par 65 in the final round to finish in sole possession of second place.
