Men's Golf Stays Home For Renaissance Invitational
Saturday, October 02, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite not playing host in this weekend’s Renaissance Invitational, the FGCU men’s golf team will get to stay home when they participate in the 12-team tournament that will be held on Sunday and Monday at The Club at Renaissance in Fort Myers.

Xavier University of the Atlantic 10 Conference will serve as the host for the 54-hole tournament that begins with two rounds on Sunday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. The Musketeers are one of four teams in the field that rank in the top 67 of latest Golfstat rankings, coming in at No. 32. Xavier is joined by Ball State (No. 37), Miami of Ohio (No. 60) and Marshall (No. 67).

The Eagles are fresh-off last weekend’s second place finish in the 13-team John Dallio Memorial Tournament hosted by DePaul University in Chicago. FGCU held a six-stroke lead heading into the final round, but fell by two strokes to IUPUI despite having four players finish in the top-20.

FGCU will sport the same five-man lineup this weekend as it did in Chicago, led by senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) who got off to a strong start in his final campaign with the Eagles. A native of Fort Myers, Mazziotta posted his fourth career top-5 finish in Chicago, playing the 54-holes at three-over par (219) en route to finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place.

Junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), Fort Myers product Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS), junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo) and senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) round out the experienced five-man squad.

FGCU will play alongside Marshall throughout the first day. The Thundering Herd are coming off a third place showing at the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Louisville. Marshall was led by redshirt sophomore Aaron Bogg who took home medalist honors with a three-round six-under par 210 (70-69-71).

A par 72, 7,063-yard course, The Club at Renaissance features four par 3s, 10 par 4s and four par 5s. With each side playing at par 36, the front measures 3,510 yards in length, while the back is 3,553 yards.
