FGCU Men's Golf Set For Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate
Saturday, October 09, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team will look to carry over the momentum from its second place showing at the competitive 12-team Renaissance Invitational last weekend when it heads to Georgia for the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Southern at Savannah Quarters Country Club.

The 14-team Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate will begin with 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 11 followed by the final round on Tuesday. Monday’s opening two rounds will commence at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start on the par 72, 7,016-yard course that was designed by Greg Norman.

FGCU’s new starting five of seniors Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) and Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College), juniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Patrick Williams (Toronto, Canada/Crescent School) along with freshman Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor HS) will take aim at the course’s four par 5s that all measure over 529 yards with the longest being the 581-yard, 17th hole. The Eagles have excelled in par 5s this season, ranking eighth in the nation in par 5 scoring with a 4.63 team average. Last weekend, FGCU played the par 5s at The Club at Renaissance at an impressive 27-under par.

Mazziotta, Robin and Pena will make their third consecutive starts to open the season, while Williams and Cote will see their first team action after playing as individuals last week. The tournament will mark the 18th straight start of Mazziotta’s career dating all the way back to the end of his sophomore season – a stretch in which he’s posted 14 top-20s, highlighted by 10 top-10s.

The team’s top finisher in the opening two tournaments, Mazziotta carries a 72.2 stroke average into the tournament. Mazziotta has posted back-to-back top-5 finishes to begin his final campaign in the Blue and Green and leads the team with 24 birdies and a 4.5 scoring average on par 5s. Out of his 29 career tournaments, Mazziotta has finished in the top-20 an astonishing 20 times and in the top-10 on 15 occasions.

Pena will man the No. 2 slot in the FGCU starting five after a tie for fourth place at the Renaissance Invitational. The two-round leader last weekend, Pena opened the tournament with a bogey-free, three-under par 69 that helped him post his second career top-5 finish. The Clewiston, Fla. product is second on the team with a 73.0 stroke average, but leads the club with 70 pars over 108 holes. After making just three starts in 2009-10, Robin makes his third consecutive start to the season. Each one of Robin’s six rounds through the opening two weekends has contributed to the team total, as he owns a 74.1 stroke average. Robin led the field in par 5 scoring last weekend at 10-under par and is second on the team with 18 birdies.

Williams and Cote earned the final two spots in the FGCU lineup after strong outings last weekend. Williams’ weekend was also highlighted by bogey-free, three-under par 69 in round two that helped the Toronto, Canada product tie for 18th place. Cote’s first career start comes on the heels of posting a top-10 finish in his first collegiate tournament. Playing as an individual, Cote finished in a tie for ninth place thanks to back-to-back under-par rounds that resulted in a one-over par 217 (76-70-71).

FGCU’s strong showing last weekend and second place finish at the John Dallio Memorial Tournament hosted by DePaul the previous weekend haven’t gone unnoticed, as the Eagles moved up to No. 70 in the latest Golf Week rankings, an improvement of over 40 spots since the previous poll.
