Eagles look to defend 2009 team title

DELAND, Fla. – With one team title already to its credit this season, the FGCU men’s golf team will close out its fall slate at the Stetson Invitational with a chance to defend its 2009 title at last year’s event. The 54-hole event will begin with two rounds on Monday at Victoria Hills Golf Club.

The nine-team tournament field will feature fellow A-Sun foes Lipscomb, USC Upstate and Stetson. The tournament will commence with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday to begin the two-round day. FGCU will play alongside Bethune-Cookman and FAU over the opening 36 holes, beginning on holes 7-9.

The Ron-Garl designed golf course at Victoria Park measures 7,149 yards in distance from the championship tees at par 72. PGA Tour pro Chris DeMarco owns the course record with a seven-under par 65.

The Eagles put together three straight under-par rounds at last year’s tournament to run away with the team title by 23 strokes. Then-sophomore Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario/Crescent School) took home medalist honors with a six-under par 210 (73-67-70), while four Eagles finished in the top-10 and all five were in the top 11.

Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) will make his fifth start of the fall and the 32nd of his career on Monday. Mazziotta has continued his illustrious career by finishing in the top-20 in all four tournaments this fall, including three straight top-10s to start the year. The Fort Myers, Fla. product sports a team-best 72.1 stroke average and is tied for the team lead with five under-par rounds. Mazziotta has 16 top-10s and 22 top-20s to his credit over 31 career tournaments.

For the fifth straight tournament, junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) will man the No. 2 slot in the FGCU lineup. Pena has been solid all fall with a 72.7 stroke average over 12 rounds, highlighted by five under-par rounds. Making his 20th career start, Pena has a pair of top-5 finishes to his credit this season and posted two one-under par 71s at last year’s Stetson Invitational.

Williams returns to defend his individual title in his first start since helping lead FGCU to a team title at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate earlier this fall. Through two tournaments and six rounds this season, Williams sports a 72.2 stroke average with a pair of top-20s and three rounds of par or better.

Juniors Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) and Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) will each make their fourth start of the year. Medinis, the No. 3 man, is still searching for his first under-par round of the fall, but owns a solid 74.4 stroke average. Self has three rounds of par or better to his credit this season for a 77.8 stroke average.

The five-man lineup of Mazziotta, Pena, Medinis, Williams and Self (1-5) is the third different lineup for FGCU this fall.
