Wednesday, April 20, 2011

BRASELTON, Ga. – Led by a top 10 finish from junior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS), the FGCU men’s golf team wrapped up its 2010-11 season on Wednesday afternoon at the Atlantic Sun Championship by finishing in a tie for sixth in the 11-team field in the conference tournament held on The Chateau Course of Chateau Elan.

The Eagles carded a final round 296 to drop one spot into a sixth place tie with USC Upstate at a three-day total of 866. FGCU opened with a 286 on Monday and followed with an even-par 284 in Tuesday’s second round.

“Today didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, but I’m very pleased with the season we had,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “As we continue to experience conference tournament play, we’ll continue to learn that it takes a higher level of focus and intensity to compete in this type of event.”

FGCU’s season featured wins at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate and Stetson Invitational in the fall, and eight top 5s out of 11 tournaments. Led first-year head coach Brent Jensen, the Eagles finished with a team single-season record 14 under-par rounds and set the single-season scoring average (290.8).

No. 49 Kennesaw State brought home the team title in convincing fashion, posting a two-under 282 in the final round to win by nine strokes. KSU junior Jeff Karlsson took home medalist honors in the 55-player field with a three-round 67-69-71/207(-6).

No. 44 UNF (854) edged out Campbell (855) for second place, as the two entered the final round in a tie. Mercer (860) produced the low round of the tournament on Wednesday with a seven-under 277 to move into fourth, while reigning A-Sun champ ETSU (861) rounded out the top five.

Medinis and classmate Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) supplied FGCU’s top two scores on the day with two-over par 73s. A native of Fort Myers, Medinis rolled in 16 pars in the final round to finish third amongst the field with 41 for the tournament. Medinis’ three-round 69(-2)-70(-1)-73/212 is one stroke off his 54-hole career record. He finished the tournament at even-par in both par 3 and par 4 scoring.

Pena’s 73 capped another top 20 finish (T-14th) at the A-Sun Championship for the junior who has finished in the top 20 all three years he’s participated. Pena also carded a 73 in the opening round before shooting a two-under 69 in Tuesday’s second round. The Clewiston, Fla. product tied for the team lead with eight birdies, finishing among the leaders with 37 pars.

Playing in the final tournament of his career, senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) turned in a 75 in his final round to set the program singles-season record for counting scores with 32 out of 33. Mazziotta’s three-round 71(E)-73-75/219 featured seven birdies which brought his season total to a team-high 121.

Mazziotta finishes the 11-tournament season with a 71.6 stroke average which ranks third all-time, while his 21 rounds at even par or better are also a single-season record. He finishes his career with 28 top 20s, and 20 top 10s in 38 career events.

Senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) also capped his career at FGCU on Wednesday with a 75 that featured seven straight pars down the stretch. Robin’s 75-72-75/222, good for 37th, saw him tie for fourth in the field in par 5 scoring at four-under. He finished the week with five pars and four birdies over his nine trips down the par 5s.

Just the third freshman to participate in the A-Sun Championship for the Eagles in the last three years, Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) finished in a tie for 40th with a 73-73-77/223. Cote was amongst the leaders in par 5 scoring (-3) and finished with seven birdies. He participated in seven tournaments this season, including five of six in the spring, finishing with a 73.3 stroke average.
