Pena in Top 100 of Golfstat Cup Standings

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After closing the fall with four straight team victories, the FGCU men’s golf team finished the first semester in the top 100 of both the Golfweek and Golfstat rankings. Led by second-year head coach Brent Jensen, the Eagles have won a combined six tournaments over the last two fall schedules.

The Green and Blue came in at No. 82 in the Golfstat rankings, while earning the No. 84 spot in the final Golfweek poll. Senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), who earned A-Sun Golfer of the Week in early October, headlines the FGCU lineup with a No. 100 ranking in the Golfstat Cup standings.

Out of its five fall tournaments, FGCU won the Cobra-PUMA Invitational (Xavier), John Dallio Memorial (DePaul), Mission Inn Collegiate Classic (St. John’s) and for the third year in a row the Stetson/CFSC Invitational.

As a team, FGCU produced a 293.5 stroke average over five 54-hole tournaments, including five rounds at even-par or lower. The Eagles rank 15th in the nation in fairways hit (.704), 22nd in birdies made (215) and 36th in par 5 scoring (4.82).

Pena placed in the top 10 of the last four tournaments to work his way into the prestigious Golfstat Cup standings. The Clewiston, Fla. product produced seven under-par rounds, including three straight at the Renaissance Invitational hosted by Xavier in which he tied for medalist honors. All 15 rounds in Pena’s team-low 72.2 stroke average counted towards the team score, stretching his streak of counting scores to 44 dating back to the end of his sophomore season.

FGCU will open the spring championship season at the competitive JU Invitational played at TPC Sawgrass. The tournament will commence with 36 holes on Monday, January 30.
