FORT MYERS, Fla. – Less than 24 hours removed from the third top 10 finish of his young collegiate career, FGCU freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week on Wednesday.

Hernandez led the Eagles to a third place finish in the field of 15 at the Rice Intercollegiate by tying for seventh overall out of 81 participants. He is the second FGCU player to be lauded by the A-Sun with a weekly award this season, joining senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) who won the award on Oct. 5.

At Rice, the Fort Myers product was one of three golfers to produce three rounds of even-par or lower, carding a 72(E)-72(E)-70(-2)/214(-2). Hernandez tied for second in the field with a team-best 12 birdies and played the par 5s at six-under. Hernandez’s fifth under-par round of his young career on Tuesday featured 12 pars, four birdies and two bogeys while playing in the lead group.

Hernandez is one of three Eagles to participate in all seven tournaments through the fall and spring so far, but the only to contribute a counting score in all 21 rounds. Over the 21 rounds, Hernandez has five under-par outings and three more at even-par to result in a 73.9 stoke average.

FGCU will take a weekend off from tournament play before it returns to action at the USF Invitational on Mar. 4-6. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at Lake Jovita Country Club in Tampa, Fla.
