FGCU Finishes Eighth at Pinetree Intercollegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – Highlighted by freshman Edward Figueroa’s (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) third top 20 finish of the year, the FGCU men’s golf team concluded play at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State at the Pinetree Country Club in eighth place out of a field of 12.

Figueroa’s back-to-back 73s on the opening day helped the Naples, Fla. product finish a tie for 15th place in the 72-player field, topping the five-man FGCU squad that produced scores of 312, 295 and a final round 317.

Host Kennesaw State (289-282(-6)-289/860) doubled its 12-stroke lead entering Tuesday’s final round and took home top honors by 24 strokes over second place No. 40 Ball State (294-289-301/884). The Owls had the top three individuals in the tournament with Jimmy Beck earning medalist honors with a 54-hole score of seven-under 209.

Figueroa, who entered the tournament off a medalist performance at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational which earned him A-Sun Golfer of the Week honors, finished with a 73-73-80/226 scorecard. Currently ranked No. 57 in the Golfstat Cup standings, Figueroa has turned in a counting score in all 12 rounds through four tournaments.

Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) produced the biggest turnaround from round one to round two on Monday, improving by 11 strokes with a one-under 71 in the afternoon. On Tuesday, Boesmans contributed a 79 to tie for 39th in the field. Also in the top 100 of the GolfStat Cup rankings at No. 47, junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) was solid on the first day with rounds of two-over 74 and 76 before finishing with a 87 to tie for 50th place.

Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) was FGCU’s low-man in the final round, carding a 77 to cap a 83-79-77/239 tournament to tie for 57th. Like Boesmans, freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) produced a double-digit turnaround on Monday, but finished up with an 81 on Tuesday.

FGCU will close out its fall season at the Stetson Invitational from Nov. 5-6. The tournament will begin on Monday, Nov. 5 with 36 holes at Victoria Hills Country Club.
