MURRELLS Inlet, S.C. – Just five days removed from its last tournament, the FGCU men’s golf team battled the quick turnaround on Monday by finishing the 36-hole opening day of the General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina in seventh place in the ultra-competitive 11-team field at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

The Eagles are just six strokes back of host Coastal Carolina, who is one of four teams in the field ranked in Golfstat’s Top 50. No. 17 Arkansas (283(-5)-299/582) holds a two-stroke lead over No. 23 Kent State (296-288(E)/584) thanks to a first round five-under 283. No. 29 Tennessee (289-300/589) is seven strokes back of first, while host No. 48 Coastal Carolina (295-310/605) is in fourth.

FGCU improved by four strokes from the morning round to the 18 holes in the afternoon with scores of 308 and 304, respectively. Junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) leads the way, posting back-to-back 75s to sit in tie for 16th place overall. Cote is among the tournament leaders with 23 pars, third in par 3 scoring (-1) and opened his second round with a 33 on the back nine (started on No. 10).

Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) was the major reason for the four-stroke improvement in the afternoon, posting the team’s lowest score of the day with a two-over 74 after an opening round 81. Like Cote, Hernandez got out to a fast start on the back nine in round two with a one-under 35 and finished the day as the team leader with seven birdies. He is also tied for fourth in the field in par 5 scoring (-4).

Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) had a pair of counting scores with a 76-80/156 to sit in a tie for 35th place. Junior Jesse Lowe (Fort Myers, Fla./Gateway Christian HS) is part of the tie for 35th, as he shot an 81 and three-over 75. Boesman’s is amongst the leaders in par 3 scoring (+1), while 11 of Lowe’s 19 pars on the day came in the second round. Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) added a counting score of 76 in the morning that included a one-under 35 on the back nine.

FGCU will take the course for the final round starting at 7:40 a.m., going off No. 10 alongside UTEP and Gardner-Webb. Live stats can be found the schedule page on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com or by going to GolfStat.com and searching for the General Hackler Championship.
