FGCU Men's Golf Completes Play at Lexus Naples Invitational

NAPLES, Fla. – The final round of the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational was held today at Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club in Naples, Fla.

Liam Kendgregan from St. Mary’s College took first place with a score of 8-under par (208). St. Mary’s College came in first place for the team competition with a score of 19-under par (845).

FGCU posted the fourth-best final round to jump into eighth place in the final team standings. The Eagles posted rounds of 313, 292 and 291 for a score of 896.

Senior Mike Claman (Wauchula, FL) posted a three-round score of 220 (70-72-78) to finish in a four-way tie for 20th individually. Senior David Steele (Fort Myers) and freshman Hartley McLeod (Fort Wayne, IN) carded identical rounds of 77-74-73 for a three-day total of 224 to tie for 30th place. Junior Drew Pierson (Lockport, Ill) finished 37th with a 228 while freshman J.J. Scott (Fort Myers) posted a 238 to finish 53rd.

One of the highlights of the competition was Mike O’Neil’s hole-in-one on the seventh hole of round one.

The first annual “Man of the Match” award presented by Golfing Naples & SW Florida Magazine was awarded after the final round. The award is intended for the player with the best attitude and etiquette during the competition; this year it was awarded to all five men of the U.S. Naval Academy, making it the “Men of the Match” award.

The Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational featured 12 of the premier collegiate golf teams around the country. The collegiate golf teams include, University of Illinois, Naval Academy, University of Wisconsin, University of Akron, Baylor University, University of Delaware, Marquette University, Fresno State University, St. Mary’s College, University of Portland, Eastern Illinois University and Florida Gulf Coast.

The Eagles will compete in the 6th Annual El Diablo Invitational, hosted by Marshall, from March 18 to 20 in Citrus Springs, Florida.
