Henderson Leads Eagles with Top-10 Finish in Diablo Invitational

OCALA, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team finished 12th in the El Diablo Invitational hosted by Marshall University with a three-round final score of 929. Jacksonville University finished first with a final score of 885.

FGCU opened the tournament with great team play, as they finished the first round in second. Freshman Kyle Hammond (Windermere, Fla) led the Eagles shooting a 70.

Senior Drew Pierson (Lockport, Ill) shot a 73 in round one and Henderson shot a 74 to round out the Eagles top three for the first round.

In the second round the Eagles top finisher was Henderson, who shot a 76. His two-day total was 150. Pierson shot a 78 to bring his two day total to 151. Hammond’s two day total was 152 after he shot an 82 in his second outing.  

During the final round of the tournament the Eagles shot 315 giving them a score of 929 and placing them 12th overall.

Henderson tied for sixth overall and was the top finisher for the Eagles with a final score of 222.  Hammond finished tied for 32nd with a score of 232 and Drew Pierson finished tied for 41st with a score of 234.  Freshman Chris Covelli (Amherst, NY) played well scoring 241.

The individual champion of the tournament was Duncan Stewart of Jacksonville University with an overall score of 207 shooting nine under.

The Eagles will next compete at the Southeastern Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Valdosta State University. The tournament is April 2-4.
