No. 24 FGCU Men's Golf Finishes 7th at Buccaneer Invitational
MIAMI, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team finished seventh in the Buccaneer Invitational hosted by Barry University with a three-round final score of 903. The invitational had 15 Division II teams in the field, seven of which are ranked in the top 25 nationally. #5 Lynn University finished first with a final score of 870.
#24 FGCU opened the tournament with excellent team play, as the team tied for fourth at the end of the first round. Freshman Kyle Hammond (Windermere, Fla) led the Eagles shooting a 69 and placing third. Freshman Kyle Henderson (Clermont, Fla) shot a 72 in round one, tying for 11th. Senior Drew Pierson (Lockport, Ill) played well with a 74, which placed him tied for 28th.
The Eagles played well in the second round, with Hammond as their top finisher tying for sixth while shooting a 74. Hammond’s two-day total was 143. Pierson continued to provide senior leadership with his steadfast play on day two, shooting a 74 and moving up to tied for 22nd. Pierson’s two-day total was 148. Henderson’s was 149 after he shot a 77 on his second outing. Henderson finished the day tied for 26th.
During the final round of the tournament, the Eagles played like a team, securing a seventh place finish. #24 FGCU defeated both #18 Washburn University and #21 Grand Canyon University by two strokes. Kyle Hammond was the top finisher for the Eagles, as he tied for seventh with a total score of 220. Drew Pierson ended the tournament tied for 22nd and a total score of 224.
Kyle Henderson and freshman Chris Covelli (Amherst, NY) played well, scoring 227 and 232 respectively. Sophomore David Blue (Edina, MN) scored 239.
The individual champion of the tournament was Hoyt McGarity of Lynn University, who scored a 213.
The Eagles will next compete at the El Diablo Invitational hosted by Marshall University at the El Diablo Golf Club in Ocala, Fla. The tournament is March 17th through March 19th.
