No. 30 FGCU Men's Golf Finishes 6th at Lexus Invitational
NAPLES, Fla. – The Florida Gulf University men’s golf team landed in sixth place in the Second Annual Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational with a three-round final score of 874. The invitational was held at the Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club with 11 teams participating,10 NCAA Division I programs. Baylor University finished first with a score of 845 in the three-day event.
The Lexus Invitational is hosted by PGA TOUR professional Peter Jacobsen and is in it’s second year running.
The Eagles are currently ranked 30th in Division II by Golfstat with their highest finish as a team at 5th at the Matlock Invitational earlier this year. In a rebuilding year the Eagles have a young team with seven freshman, two sophomores and only one junior and one senior.
Freshman Kyle Hammond (Windermere, FL) and Kyle Henderson (Clermont, FL) led the Eagles team improvment in the final round. Hammond ended the Invitational in 15th place with a final round of 67 and a three day total of 215 one under. Hammonds’s personal best this year was at the Matlock Invitational hosted by Florida Southern where he finished 4th. Henderson tied for 21st place with a final round of 70 and a three day total of 218 two over.
Sophomore David Blue (Edina, MN) ended tied for 27th place with an improved round of 70 on day three to end with a score of 223. Blue shot 82 on day one and 71 on day two.
Senior Drew Pierson (Lockport, IL) ended with of final score of 224 to place tied at 29th. Pierson shot 79 in round one and improved to a 71 on day two and shot 74 to end the invitational.
Eagle freshman Chris Covelli (Amherst, NY) shot 229 for a final score going 76 on day one, 77 on day two and 76 on the final round.
Baylor University’s Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) took first place with a final score of 205 and 11 under. Baca shot 68, 70 and 67 in the three days.
The Eagles will next compete at Buccaneer Invitation ional hosted by Barry University in Miami, Fla. March 5th through 7th.
