DELAND, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team ended the fall season on a high note with a record-setting first place finish at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational Tournament in Deland, Fla. on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Pat Williams submitted the top individual score at the conclusion of the final round.
The Eagles set a tournament record with a score of 851 (283-281-287) on the way to the team’s third 1st place finish of the fall season. The next best school, Florida Atlantic University, submitted a team score of 874 (296-287-291).
"I'm very proud of these guys for contributing and stepping up," said coach Brent Jensen. "Each round we had different guys step up and play well. Winning this event and setting a tournament record will be a huge confidence boost for the team going into the spring season."
On the individual scoreboard, the entire five man squad for FGCU scored inside the top 15 overall with Williams (Toronto, Ontario) defeating the field with a three-round score of 210 (73-67-70).
Sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) earned fifth overall with his score of 212 (71-70-71). Senior Mike Hart (London, England) and Junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) finished in a tie for ninth, each submitting a scorecard of 219 (68-76-75) and (74-68-77) correspondingly. Tied for 11th with a 220 (71-78-71), Sophomore Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla.) rounded out the pack for the Eagles.
Throughout the fall season, the Eagles have only placed outside the top five on one occasion. FGCU has earned first place finishes at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate, FGCU Men’s Invitational, and Stetson/CFSC Invitational, and a second place finish at the Bethune-Cookman Fall Invitational.
The Eagles will look to continue their successful play when they head to Houston, Texas to open the spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament on February 14.
