HOUSTON, Texas – The FGCU men’s golf team opened the 2010 spring season on Monday morning as they traveled to Houston for the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament. Heading into Tuesday’s final round, the Eagles are currently in seventh place overall and junior Daniel Mazziotta sits in a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard.
At the conclusion of the opening round, the Blue and Green were tied with defending champion Pacific for fifth overall, with a combined score of 310. Tournament host, Rice, sat atop the leaderboard with a team score of 297.
Sophomore Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles through the opening round, submitting a 76 which tied for 11th overall.
The second round would prove to be a bit more difficult as the team continued to battle the poor Houston weather conditions. FGCU turned in a two-round 622 (310-312) which put them in sole possession of seventh place overall as the first day came to completion.
Nebraska, Houston, and Northern Colorado are in a three-way tie for fourth place overall, each submitting a 621. Rice University leads all schools heading into the final round with a 594 (297-297).
On the individual leaderboard, Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) submitted the best two-round score for the Eagles with a 152 (78-74) which placed him in a four way tie for eighth overall.
The 2010 Rice Intercollegiate will conclude on Tuesday afternoon with the final round set to begin with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
