HOUSTON, Texas – The FGCU men’s golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the 2010 spring season on Tuesday afternoon in Houston, Texas at the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament. In the field of 15, the Eagles sat in sixth place on the team leaderboard while junior Daniel Mazziotta placed eighth overall at the conclusion of the final round.
The Blue and Green picked up the pace in the final round turning in a 302, which was their best team single-round score of the three-round event. The Eagles ended the spring opener in sixth place with an aggregate score of 924 (310-312-302), finishing ahead of Houston, Louisiana Tech, Miami (OH), and Missouri State to round out the top 10.
“I'm disappointed with our play in the spring opener,” said assistant coach Brent Jensen. “The weather conditions were difficult, however, they were the same for every team. As a team, will go back and iron out the kinks and work on being tougher mentally, because that's what separates great teams from good teams. The squad will bounce back and I'm confident they will still have a very successful spring.”
The 2009 defending champion, Pacific, finished the tournament in third place with a score of 909 (310-302-297) while tournament host, Rice, took home the 2010 team trophy submitting an 886 (297-297-292).
FGCU had two participants place inside the top 25 on the individual leaderboard. Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) turned in the best three-round score for the Eagles with a 225 (78-74-73), which was good for eighth place and sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) submitted a 231 (77-77-77) tying for 22nd overall.
Rice University also collected the top individual and runner-up trophies at the award presentation, as Christopher Brown earned the top individual honor with a 216 (74-73-69), while Michael Whitehead was recognized as runner-up with a 220 (72-75-73).
The Eagles will tee up again on Monday, March 8, as they travel to Jacksonville Beach, Fla. for the Don Benbow Intercollegiate hosted by Butler University.
