FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team will look to defend their title for a second time at the Don Benbow North-South Collegiate at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. on Monday. The Eagles took the team title in 2008 and defended the title a year ago.
This year’s tournament, hosted by Butler University, will see a 16-team field. The Eagles will square off against Appalachian State, Butler, Florida Atlantic, IPFW, Hampton, Florida A&M, Wittenberg, Bethune- Cookman, Creighton, Morehead State, Laval, Eckerd College, Armstrong Atlantic, Georgia Southwestern, and Jacksonville.
The 18-hole "Jacksonville Beach" course at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Course facility features 6,510 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.9 and it has a slope rating of 126. Jacksonville Beach Golf Club is municipally owned and operated by the City of Jacksonville Beach. The course was opened in 1960 and redesigned by PGA Professional Robert Walker in 1987.
In their first appearance at the 2008 North-South Collegiate, the Eagles brought home the team title by defeating the 13-team field with a 568 (291-277), while Mike Hart (London, England) earned top individual honors with a 138 (71-67). The Eagles defended their title in 2009, placing first of 11 teams with a two-round 544 (267-277), while four individuals placed in the top 15 overall.
FGCU opened the spring season with a sixth place finish at the15-team Rice Intercollegiate (2/15/10) with an aggregate score of 924 (310-312-302). The Eagles had two participants place inside the top 25 on the individual leaderboard. Junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) turned in the best three-round score with a 225 (78-74-73), good for eighth place, and sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) submitted a 231 (77-77-77), tying for 22nd overall.
