Men's Golf Sits Tied for Fifth After Round One

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – As the opening round of the 2010 FAU Spring Invitational came to a close on Friday afternoon at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla., the FGCU men’s golf team sits in a tie for fifth place. The Eagles currently have two participants in the top 15 on the individual board.

On day one, the five Blue and Green participants combined for a 291 to place them in a two-way tie for fifth with tournament host FAU in the field of 16. The Eagles are currently ahead of such schools as Minnesota (293), Eastern Michigan (293), Iowa (295), USF (298), Marquette (298), Northern Illinois (301), Ohio State (302) and Wisconsin (306). Illinois is at the top of the leaderboard after the first round, handing in a 282.

FGCU has two participants in the top 15 on the player leaderboard after one round. Sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) is in a six-way tie for fifth after submitting a 70 and junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) turned in an opening round 72, placing him in a tie for 15th with nine other individuals. Notre Dame’s Doug Fortner leads all participants with a one round 64.

The second round of the three-round tournament picks up on Saturday morning with an 11:30 a.m. tee time and the final round will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
