BRASELTON, Ga. – The 2009-10 FGCU men’s golf season concluded on Wednesday with a second place finish at the 2010 A-Sun Men’s Golf Championship at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan. The Eagles held fourth place after day one, third place after day two and finished four strokes off No. 31 ETSU on the final day for second place overall.
“The team played great and was very consistent throughout the entire tournament,” said head coach Dr. Jim Suttie. “We were very close to winning this championship and it was a great experience for everyone, particularly Brandon Pena with the lowest final round score in A-Sun history. I was very pleased with our overall performance, but we just came up a little short.”
In their second A-Sun tournament appearance, the Blue and Green made their presence known with a second place finish in the 11-team A-Sun Conference field. After carding the low score of 282 on the final day, the Fort Myers team turned in a tournament score of 863 (292-289-282) to move four strokes ahead of No. 20 UNF and four strokes behind No. 31 ETSU.
Sitting in a tie for 18th heading into the final round, sophomore Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla.) set the tournament-low single round score of 65 on the last day to move into sole possession of second place with a 213 (71-77-65). This was Pena’s career best round and put him in a four-way tie for the second best single round score in FGCU program history. Steven Taylor set the best single round score during the 2007 NCAA DII Men’s South Regional when he posted a 64 in the third round of the tournament.
Seamus Power earned top individual honors and becomes the fifth player in the 32-year history of the championship to earn medalist honors twice, joining 1983 PGA Championship winner Hal Sutton (Centenary, 1979-80), Southeastern Louisiana Oliver Thomson (1992, 1994), Troy’s Josh Broadaway (1999, 2000) and Jacksonville’s Duncan Stewart (2005-06).
The four other Eagle participants also placed inside the top 20 on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied for ninth with a 219 (75-72-72) and junior Daniel Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla.) submitted a three round 220 (74-73-73) which gave him a share of 12th overall. Additionally, senior Michael Hart (London, England) handed in a 221 (72-73-76) to tie for 17th, while sophomore Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario) tied for 19th with a 222 (79-71-72) tournament score.
FGCU took top team honors at the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate (10/1/09), the FGCU Eagle Invitational (10/12/09) and the Stetson/CFSC Invitational (11/3/09), where they set a new tournament record score of 851 (283-281-287). The Blue and Green’s top finish of the spring came at the Mission Inn Spring Fling (3/12/09) where they earned second place in the field of nine. The Eagles will now add the second place finish at the 2010 A-Sun Championship to their resume of great finishes on the season.
As individuals, Mazziotta, Williams and Hart picked up tournament titles this season. Mazziotta took top honors at the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate, while Williams did so at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational and Hart at the FGCU Eagle Invitational. Medinis also placed in the top 10 at five tournaments this season, highlighted by a share of second place at the Bethune-Cookman Fall Invitational (10/25/09). Pena joins the list of top individual recognition with his second place finish at this week’s 2010 A-Sun Championship.
Participating in nine tournaments this season, Hart completed his career as a member of the FGCU men’s golf team at the A-Sun Championship tournament. His senior season was highlighted by a first place finish at the FGCU Eagle Invitational and a third place finish at the Mission Inn Spring Fling, while compiling a 75.29 scoring average on the year. Hart's lowest round of the year came at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational where he submitted an opening round 68.
