Mazziotta finishes in a tie for fourth place individually
CHICAGO, Ill. – The FGCU men’s golf team carded a four-man score of 305 in Sunday’s final round of the John Dallio Memorial Tournament hosted by DePaul University to finish in second place, just two strokes back of IUPUI in the 13-team field at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club.
IUPUI (308-286-296/890) made up nine strokes and moved up from fourth place on the final day, turning in a 296 in the third round. IUPUI’s 296 was the lowest round of the day and one of just two scores under 300, as only on team improved from round two to round three.
FGCU’s 305 was their worst score out of the three rounds, joining six other teams that accomplished the same feat in the final round. The Eagles’ two-day 297-290-305/892 was nine strokes better than Detroit (901) in third. Loyola-Chicago (902) and Oakland (903) rounded out the top five.
Senior Danielle Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) earned his fourth career top-five finish with a team-best one-over par 73 on Sunday. The Fort Myers, Fla. product produced a three-round 74-72-73/219(+3) to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place, just five strokes back of medalist Ben Engle (74-70-70/214) from IUPUI. Mazziotta finished second in the field of 73 in par 4 scoring (+2), third in birdies (13) and played the course’s par 5s at four-under over the two days. He has now finished in the top 10 individually in 14 of 28 career tournaments.
The second counting score of the afternoon came from junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), who turned in a 76. Pena’s 75-73-76/224 was good for sole possession of 11th place, his ninth career top-20 finish. A native of Clewiston, Fla., Pena produced 31 pars on the weekend, helping him play the par 4s at a solid four-over par.
After producing 25 pars over the first two rounds, junior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) had more of up-and-down day on Sunday with a 78. Medinis finished in a tie for 14th position with a 72-76-78/226. Despite just nine pars in the final round, Medinis finished second amongst the field in pars (35) and led the team in par 3 scoring (+2).
Senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) turned in the fourth and final score that added up to the team score of 305 with a 78 in Sunday’s round. Robin gave the Eagles four players in the top-20 by tying for 17th place with rounds of 76-73-78/227. After a solid finish to Saturday in which he played the final 27 holes of the day at even-par, junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) tied for 51st place (79-72-87/238).
Led by first-year head coach Brent Jensen who made his coaching debut in his hometown of Chicago, FGCU was the only team with four players in the top-20, while just one other team (DePaul) had three players in the top-20.
FGCU will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Renaissance Invitational hosted by Xavier University. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held locally in Fort Myers at the Renaissance Golf Club. The tournament will commence with two rounds on Sunday followed by the final round on Monday, Oct. 4.
