Eagles looking to build-off tournament title at Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With one tournament title and a pair of runner-up finishes already to its credit this fall, the FGCU men’s golf team will return to action for the first time in 12 days on Monday when it opens play at the Saint Mary ‘s Invitational at Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Courses in Seaside, Calif.
The 54-hole tournament will begin with two rounds on Monday followed by the final round on Tuesday. FGCU will be paired with San Francisco and Cal Poly on the first day, as the trio will begin the day on holes 4-7 on Bayonet GC and finish Monday’s final 18 holes at Blackhorse GC. A shotgun start is set for 11 a.m. ET. Tuesday’s final round will be played at Bayonet GC and will also begin at 11 a.m. ET.
Ranked No. 73 in the current GolfWeek rankings, FGCU will square off against five other top 100 programs and six more that fall at 101-150 out of the 15-team field. Notre Dame is the tournament’s top ranked team at No. 27, while San Francisco (#46), UC Irvine (#82), Nevada (#92) and Miami of Ohio (#95) round out the top 100 teams.
With six straight par or better rounds to its credit, FGCU ranks 17th in the nation in team scoring average at 288.4. In their win at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, the Eagles put together the second-best 54-hole tournament in program history with a 281(-7)-275(-13)-288(E)/844(-20). FGCU is 26-under par over its last six rounds.
FGCU will take aim at the four par 5s that each course presents, as the Blue and Green lead the nation in par 5 scoring with a stroke average of 4.64 per hole. Each course begins and ends with a par 5, highlighted by Bayonet GC’s 613-yard No. 8 and Blackhorse GC’s 605-yard No. 18. FGCU has played the last two tournament’s par 5s at an incredible 56-under par.
Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) leads the same FGCU starting five that took the links over the opening two tournaments of the season. Mazziotta has three top 10s to his credit this season, including a pair of top 5s, and ranks 54th in the nation with a 71.6 scoring average. The Fort Myers product also ranks 17th nationally in par 5 scoring (4.47) while leading the team with 38 birdies.
For the fourth straight tournament, junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) will man the No. 2 slot in the FGCU lineup. Pena enters the tournament coming off back-to-back fourth place finishes at the Renaissance Invitational and the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate. Pena leads the team with five under-par rounds, including three in a row in his last outing, and sports a 72.0 stroke average.
Like Mazziotta and Pena, senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) will make his fourth consecutive start. Robin has a two top 20s to his credit this season and is coming off back-to-back under-par rounds to close the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate. Robin is tied for the team lead with two eagles and has a 74.0 stroke average.
The final two spots in the lineup will be manned by juniors Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) and Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS), who each started the first two tournaments of the year. Medinis has carded even-par 72s in three of his six rounds to spark a 74.3 stroke average. Self also has three par or better rounds to his credit, highlighted by an even-par 72 and one-under par 71 to close out his last tournament at the Renaissance Invitational.
After opening his collegiate head coaching career in his hometown of Chicago at the John Dallio Memorial earlier this year, Brent Jensen leads the Eagles in the tournament held by his alma mater. Jensen played four seasons at Saint Mary’s before serving as an assistant under head coach Scott Hardy for another three years.
