Eagles tied for 13th in competitive field

SEASIDE, Calif. – On a day in which just two teams broke par, the FGCU men’s golf team saw its string of six consecutive par or better rounds come to an end with scores of 304 and 305 to sit in a tie for 13th place after the first two rounds of the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Courses.

Tournament leader Notre Dame (281-289/570), who is currently ranked No. 27 by GolfWeek, carded the low round of the day with a seven-under par 281 in the first round and owns a 16-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday’s final 18 holes. Host Saint Mary’s is in second place with a 586, while Santa Clara (587) is just one stroke back of the Gaels in third place.

The Eagles sat in a tie for eighth place after the first round with a team score of 304 at Bayonet GC. FGCU was only one of two teams not to improve on their first round score in the afternoon, as play shifted to Black Horse GC for round two. The Blue and Green’s 305 in the second round equals their worst round of the season.

FGCU was paced by an even-par 72 in each round with the first coming from junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) in the morning round. Pena was one of just seven players at par or better in the first round, but followed up his 72 with an 80 in round two to sit in a tie for 46th place (72-80/152). Senior Dan Mazziotta’s (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) even-par 72 in round two helped him move up 19 spots into a tie for 29th (78-72/150) after a 78 to open the tournament. Mazziotta played the course’s par 5s at one-under par for the day and produced four birdies on the front nine in round two.

Junior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) had a solid start to the tournament with a two-over par 74 that featured 14 pars and one birdie. Medinis then followed with a 77 in round two and sits in a tie for 41st overall. Senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College) led the team with five birdies on the day, but it translated to an 80-76/146 and a tie for 68th place.

Tuesday’s final round will commence with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. ET as the teams will return to Bayonet GC. The Eagles will be playing alongside Loyola-Maryland (312-297/609) and UC Santa Barbara (309-301/610) in the final round and will begin on holes 14-17. Tomorrow will mark the first time this season (3 tournaments) that FGCU won’t own the lead going into the final round.
