Eagles card 293 on final day to move up three spots

SEASIDE, Calif. – After a disappointing first day at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, the FGCU men’s golf team responded with its best round of the 54-hole tournament, carding a 293 in the final round to move up three spots into 11th place out of the 15-team field at Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Courses.

The Eagles’ round of 293 followed a day in which they shot 304 and 305 over the opening 36 holes. FGCU’s three-round total of 902 was just one stroke back of San Francisco, who entered the tournament at No. 45 in GolfWeek’s rankings.

No. 27 Notre Dame began the day with a 16-stroke lead and added to that total, winning the tournament with a 281(-7)-289-291/861. Notre Dame’s Tom Usher took home medalist honors with a four-under par 212 (68-72-72). Host Saint Mary’s (881) edged out Pacific (882) in a close battle for second place. Santa Clara (886) and Nevada (889) rounded out the top 5.

Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) built-off his even-par 72 to close Monday with a team tournament-low one-under par 71 in the final round. Mazziotta’s under-par round was just one of five on the afternoon, as he moved up 15 spots to tie for 14th place (78-72-71/221). The top 20 finish was the fourth in four tournaments this season for Mazziotta and his 22nd in 31 career tournaments. Mazziotta’s one-under par 71 featured 15 pars, two birdies and just one bogey.

Juniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) were each part of an eight-way tie for 26th place at the end of the tournament. Pena’s final round was an up-and-down battle, as he carded six birdies, but also had four bogeys and a double-bogey en route to his second even-par 72 of the tournament. Medinis produced a much steadier 54 holes with a 74-77-73/224. Medinis finished the tournament with 39 pars.

The final counting score of the day came from senior Gyles Robin (Jersey, England/De La Salle College), who turned in a 77.
