FGCU Repeats As Stetson Invitational Champ
Mazziotta leads Eagles to second team title of the fall season
DELAND, Fla. – Entering the final round with a 10-stroke lead, the FGCU men’s golf team held on to its double-digit advantage with a final round one-over par 289 on Tuesday en route to claiming the Stetson Invitational title for the second straight year at Victoria Hills Golf Club.
Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) led the Eagles to their second win of the fall, claiming medalist honors with a three-round 70(-2)-68(-4)-72(E)/210(-6). Entering the final round tied with USC Upstate’s Brad Sill and playing in the same group, Mazziotta fired an even-par 72 while Sill carded a 73. The individual title is the second of Mazziotta’s career after winning the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate last fall.
The Eagles’ 289 on Tuesday came on the heels of yesterday’s record-breaking 16-under par 272 in the second round. FGCU’s 296-272(-16)-289/857(-7) was 10 strokes better than Jacksonville State (867) in second place and 21 strokes clear of Atlantic Sun foe Stetson (878) in third.
“I’m pleased with the way we played considering we entered the day with the pressure of having the lead against less than ideal conditions,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “The cold weather in the morning made it tough to go low over the first few holes, but the guys didn’t get rattled. It’s a great way to close a strong fall season and it gives us good momentum heading into the spring.”
As a team, FGCU tied for the tournament lead with 44 birdies and led with 179 pars, playing the course’s par 5s at nine-under over the 54 holes. FGCU won last year’s Stetson Invitational by 23 strokes, posting three straight under-par rounds for a 54-hole score of 13-under par 851 (283-281-287).
Mazziotta’s second individual title gives him a remarkable 16 top-10s and 23 top-20s over 32 career tournaments. The Fort Myers, Fla. product tied for second in the field of 45 with 12 birdies, while also carding 34 pars. Over three rounds on the course’s front nine holes, Mazziotta recorded one of the tournament’s four eagles, five birdies and just three bogeys.
Junior Alex Medinis’ (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) final round one-over par 73 put him a tie for fourth overall, good for his third career top-5 finish. Medinis’ best round came in the afternoon on Monday when he shot the low round of the tournament at five-under par 67. His two-under par 214 (74-67-73) featured 40 pars and eight birdies.
Junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) picked up his third top-10 placing of the fall by finishing tied for sixth in the individual standings. Pena’s bogey-free, one-under par 71 on Tuesday was his second under-par round of the tournament and wrapped up a 75-69(-3)-71(-1)/215(-1). The Clewiston, Fla. product has produced an even-par or better round in seven straight tournaments dating back to last year and has seven-under par rounds in his last four tournaments.
The defending individual champ of the 2009 Stetson Invitational, junior Patrick Williams (Toronto, Canada/Crescent School) put together another strong round with a one-over par 73. Williams carded a two-under par 70 in the afternoon round on Monday and finished in sole possession of 13th place (77-70(-2)-73/220). Junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) gave FGCU five players in the top-20 by tying for 17th. Self’s tournament was highlighted by a career-low, four-under par 68 in the second round.
FGCU concludes its fall with a pair of team titles (Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, Stetson Invitational) and two runner-ups (John Dallio Memorial, Renaissance Invitational) out of five events. In all, the Eagles produced seven-under par rounds, already good for third on the single-season list. Mazziotta and Pena led the way with stroke averages of 71.7 and 72.5, respectively.
