FORT MYERS, Fla. – After closing out the fall season with an individual win at the Stetson Invitational, FGCU senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Month for November, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The monthly accolade from the A-Sun is the first of Mazziotta’s illustrious career that features 16 top-10s and 23 top-20s over 32 career tournaments.
A native of Fort Myers, Fla., Mazziotta opened the Stetson Invitational (Nov. 8-9) with rounds of two-under par 70 and four-under par 68, to enter the final round tied for the lead with USC Upstate’s Brad Sill. Mazziotta then edged out Sill by one stroke with an even-par 72 to clinch his second career individual title and lead FGCU to a repeat championship at the Stetson Invitational.
It was a great fall for Mazziotta, as he posted a team-best 71.7 stroke average that ranks 84th nationally and 47th against par (-0.33). Out of 15 rounds, Mazziotta carded seven-under par rounds and three more at even-par. Mazziotta finished in the top-20 in all five tournaments and in the top-5 an impressive three times. He also ranks in the top-50 nationally in par 5 scoring (4.58/t-26th), birdies (56/t-29th) and fairways hit (.786/t-46th).
In their first semester under first-year head coach Brent Jensen, the Blue and Green produced tournament titles at the Savannah Mizuno Intercollegiate and the Stetson Invitational. FGCU also turned in a pair of runner-ups and finished at under-par as a team in seven of 15 rounds over five tournaments. For the fall, FGCU finished sixth nationally in fairways hit (.723), tied for 10th in birdies (238) and tied for 11th in par 5 scoring (4.75).
Mazziotta and the Eagles will be back in action when they begin their spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 21-22. The two-day event will feature 36 holes on day one and will be played at Westwood Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
