KAPALUA, MAUI, Hawaii – Former FGCU men’s golfer Derek Lamely and 33 other Tour winners from last year will open the 2011 PGA Tour season on Thursday at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions played on the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.
Lamely earned his way into the 34-player field by winning the Puerto Rico Open last March in a season in which he finished 104th in the FedEx Cup standings with 487 points. He also posted top 20 finishes at the Bob Hope Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Paired with Jonathan Byrd, who won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open with a hole-in-one on the fourth playoff hole last October, Lamely will begin his round on the par-73, 7,411-yard course at 3:50 p.m. ET.
Live coverage of the Tournament of Champions can be seen on the Golf Channel beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Golf Channel will carry each round with coverage starting on Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. and 6-10 p.m. for Sunday’s final round. The first three rounds can also be heard live on Sirius XM Radio.
Lamely participated in 28 PGA events in 2010, making 13 cuts and posting a stroke average of 71.4. His tournament season was highlighted by the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and PGA Championship at historic Whistling Straights.
