Eagles Set to Open Play at 11th Annual Rice Intercollegiate

HOUSTON, Texas - The FGCU men’s golf team takes the course for the second time in the spring season on Monday morning when play at the 11th Annual Rice Intercollegiate commences at Westwood Golf Club with a 36-hole first day.

The event features 15 teams, including six in the top 100 of Golf Week’s current rankings. The Eagles, who produced two team titles in the fall, are ranked No. 87 by Golf Week. Included in the field are New Mexico State (No. 51), Houston (No. 72), Louisiana Tech (No. 83), Miami (Ohio) (No. 93) and Nebraska (No. 100).

Taking the par 72, 7184-yard Westwood Golf Club on Monday for the Eagles will be the lineup of senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS), junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), junior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS), junior Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario/Crescent School) and freshman Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS).

Mazziotta will make his 34th career start and put his string of six consecutive top 20 finishes this season on the line. The Fort Myers, Fla. native had eight under-par rounds in the fall and owns 24 top 20s in 33 tournaments. Pena has also played in each of the team’s six events this season and has placed in the top 20 five times.

Monday’s opening two rounds will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. The Eagles will be teeing off on holes 4-7 alongside Louisiana Tech and Texas State.
