FORT MYERS, Fla. – After closing the 11th Annual Rice Intercollegiate with back-to-back rounds of three-under par 69 en route to a second place finish, FGCU junior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week.
Pena’s 72(E)-69(-3)-69(-3)/210(-6) at Rice helped FGCU finish second among the team standings. The Clewiston, Fla. product is the second Eagle to be lauded with a conference award this season. Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) was named A-Sun Golfer of the month on Dec. 1.
Tuesday’s final round looked almost identical to Pena’s final round on Monday, as his second straight three-under par 69 was highlighted by another 33 on the course’s front nine. The Clewiston, Fla. product’s 72(E)-69(-3)-69(-3)/210(-6) put him in a three-way tie for second in the field of 75 individuals and equaled his career low for three rounds which he set in the fall at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate. Pena’s third top 5 of the season and fourth top 10 featured a tournament-high 40 pars, 10 birdies and just four bogeys. Pena went bogey-free on the front nine over the two days with seven birdies.
Pena and Mazziotta are the only two FGCU players that have participated in all 21 rounds over seven events this season. Pena leads the team with a 72.5 stroke average that features nine under-par rounds. Out of the seven tournaments, he has finished in the top 20 six times. All 21 of his rounds this season have counted towards the four-man score.
FGCU will be back on the course over the first weekend of March at the USF Invitational. The three-day tournament will begin on Friday, March 4 at Lake Jovita Golf Club.
