TAMPA, Fla. – Less than two weeks removed from a runner-up finish at the Rice Intercollegiate, the FGCU men’s golf team will open play at the 21-team USF Invitational on Friday at Lake Jovita Country Club South Course.
The 21-team field is highlighted by six teams in the top 100 of the current Golf Week rankings, including three in the top 50. During the first round, the Eagles will play alongside the tournament’s highest ranked programs in No. 26 North Texas and No. 32 UCF. The three teams will be the last to tee off, beginning at 12:45 p.m.
FGCU will send the lineup of senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS), juniors Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS), Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario/Crescent School) and Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) along with freshman Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) to the 7,153-yard, par 72 course.
The tournament is the third of the spring and eighth of the season for the Eagles, who have two titles and three runner-ups to their credit. FGCU turned in a pair of under-par rounds as a team at the Rice Intercollegiate and have six on the year.
Mazziotta headlines FGCU’s group of five participants. The Fort Myers, Fla. product sports a 72.2 stroke average and is now the only Eagle to play in every event this season. Mazziotta has finished in the top 20 in all seven tournaments in 2010-11 and 25 of 34 for his career.
The 54-hole tournament will feature one round on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
