FORT MYERS, Fla. – Less than 24 hours removed from winning his second individual title of the year at the UCF Invitational, FGCU men’s golf senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) has been tabbed the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The weekly award is the second of the spring for an FGCU golfer, while Mazziotta earned Golfer of the Month accolades in the fall after winning the Stetson Invitational.
Mazziotta turned in the best performance of his illustrious four-year career as an Eagle this past Monday and Tuesday, defeating the nation’s 51st-ranked player in Liberty’s Robert Karlsson on the second hole of a playoff at Rino Pinar Country Club. Mazziotta birdied each of the playoff holes to win his third career tournament.
The Fort Myers, Fla. product was able to take home the individual title thanks to producing three straight under-par rounds en route to a 12-under 204 (65(-7)-69(-3)-70(-2)). Mazziotta’s three-round 12-under par score equaled the program’s 54-hole tournament record, while his seven-under par 65 in the first round tied for the second-best round by an Eagle. During the tournament, Mazziotta carded 34 pars, 16 birdies and four bogeys. Mazziotta’s run of birdies put his season total at 102, mark that ranks third in the nation.
The only FGCU player to participate in all nine tournaments this season, Mazziotta sports a 71.5 stroke average that ranks in the top 50 nationally according to Golf Stat. Mazziotta finished at par or lower in five of his last six rounds over the past two tournaments, producing a 68.3 stroke average with a pair of top 5s. Mazziotta is just one round shy of equaling the program single-season record for rounds at par or lower (18) after setting the career record on Monday with 40.
Mazziotta and the Eagles will be back in action at the FAU Spring Invitational on Friday, March 25. The three-day event will be held at Gleneagles Country Club.
