DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team used an even-par 288 in Saturday’s second round of the FAU Spring Break Championship at Gleneagles Country Club to move up into fifth place at the 17-team event.
The even-par round by the Eagles was one of just four at par or lower on Saturday, as the Blue and Green advanced up the leader board one spot after entering the day in sixth. FGCU’s two-day 293-288(E)/581 is just six strokes back of DePaul (575) in second place.
Senior Dan Mazziotta (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) climbed up the individual leader board behind a two-under par 70 that moved him from tied for 15th all the way into a tie for eighth position. Mazziotta’s two-under 70 comes after an opening round even-par 72. Today’s round gives Mazziotta an amazing 19 rounds at par or lower this season, setting a new single-season record.
After posting a four-under par 68 in the Friday’s first round, junior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) followed with a one-over par 73 to remain in the field of 93s top five. Medinis sits in a tie for fifth place.
No. 24 Ohio State continued its strong play with a seven-under 281 on Saturday. The Buckeyes, one of four top 100 teams in the tournament according to Golf Week, holds a 16-stroke lead (278(-10)-281(-7)/559) heading into the final round.
