SEASIDE, Calif. – The FGCU men’s golf team opened its fall campaign at the St. Mary’s Invitational on Monday, finishing the 36-hole day in sole possession of ninth place in the 15-team field after two rounds at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses.

The Eagles began the day with a four-man score of 306 on the Bayonet Course before improving on the Black Horse course with a second-round 297. FGCU’s two-round 603 is nine strokes out of fifth place. The tournament boasts five teams that finished in the top 100 of Golf Week’s final 2011 spring rankings and 10 teams from the West.

Under-par rounds were tough to come by, as Oregon (567), who finished No. 22 in last year’s final Golf Week rankings, carded the only two of the three on the day to take a nine-stroke lead into Tuesday. The Ducks opened with a two-under 286 and followed with a seven-under 281. UAB (576) is nine strokes back thanks to a six-under 282 in the second round.

Senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) carded FGCU’s lowest round twice on the day, highlighted by two-under 70 in the afternoon. Pena opened with a three-over 75 despite carding a quartet of birdies and followed with a two-under 70 in round two to move into a tie for 11th individually in the 83-player field. The Clewiston, Fla. product had nine birdies on the day and has contributed a counting score in his last 30 rounds, dating back to his sophomore campaign.

Former Fort Myers News-Press Player of the Year Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) opened his collegiate career in the Green and Blue with back-to-back 75s to sit in a tie for 30th. Hernandez excelled on the back nine of each course, combining to go three-under over the two rounds with all six of his birdies on the day coming on the back.

Senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) turned in a counting score each round with a 78-76/154 to finish in a tie for 49th place. Medinis had a team-high 20 pars on the day. Redshirt junior Patrick Williams’ (Toronto, Canada/Crescent School) 78 in the first round went towards the team score while is second 78 did not. Junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) bounced back from a tough first round with a four-over 76 in the afternoon that saw him play one-over through the last 16 holes.
