SEASIDE, Calif. – The FGCU men’s golf team wrapped up play at the season-opening St. Mary’s Invitational in a three-way tie for 10th place in the competitive 15-team field at the 54-hole event held at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses.

Highlighted by senior Alex Medinis’ (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) even-par 72, the Eagles carded a four-man score of 312 to ultimately slide from ninth to a tie for 10th with UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge. FGCU finished with a three-round 306-297-312/915.

PAC-12 member Oregon, who finished at No. 22 in Golf Week’s final spring 2011 rankings, cruised to the team title with three straight under-par rounds. The Ducks produced three of the top four rounds of the tournament en route to a 11-under par 853 (286-281-286). Oregon finished 13 strokes ahead of UAB.

FGCU’s top finisher in both rounds on Monday, senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) capped his 22nd place finish with a 77 on Tuesday. Pena extended his counting score streak to 31 rounds on the day and was the Green and Blue’s top finisher with a 75-70(-2)-77/222. His 11 birdies over the two days were a team-high, while he finished amongst the tournament leaders in par 3 (+1) and par 5 scoring (-4).

Freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) turned in a counting score in each of his first three rounds as an Eagle, carding a 75-75-83/233 to tie for 56th place. The fourth and final counting score on Tuesday came from junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS), who shot an 80. English’s best round came Monday afternoon in the form of a four-over 76.
