FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team will get a chance to stay home for its next tournament when it takes part in the Cobra-PUMA Invitational hosted by Xavier University at Miromar Lakes Golf Club beginning on Sunday.

Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) of the Atlantic 10 Conference will serve as the host for the 54-hole, 12-team tournament that begins with two rounds on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Eagles will play the par-72, 7,400-yard course alongside Eastern Kentucky the first day, beginning on holes 3-5.

It marks the second consecutive year FGCU has participated in Xavier’s Tournament held in Southwest Florida. Last year, the Green and Blue finished second to Xavier in the 12-team event held at The Club at Renaissance in Fort Myers. The Musketeers defeated the Eagles by three strokes, as both teams accounted for six of the tournament’s seven even-par or lower team scores.

Four the five participants from the St. Mary’s Invitational will take the course again this weekend for the Eagles. Seniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) along with redshirt junior Patrick Williams (Toronto, Canada/Crescent School) and freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) will all make their second straight start. Reigning A-Sun Freshman of the Year Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) will also be a part of the five-man team.

Pena was FGCU’s top finisher in the season-opening tournament at St. Mary’s and has contributed to the team score in 30 straight rounds played. Last year, Pena was the two-round leader at the tournament hosted by Xavier, eventually finishing in a tie for fourth place with a two-under 214.

It will be the 24th collegiate tournament start of Medinis’ career, but his last in his hometown. Hernandez, also a Fort Myers product, will make his second collegiate start, but first in front of his family and friends.

FGCU will also enter four individuals into the tournament, including Naples native Phillip Boljanovich (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) who will play in his first-ever tournament. Senior Niklas Ahola (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone HS), junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) and junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) will count towards the individual standings, but can’t contribute to the overall team score. The quartet will start on holes 16-18

Miromar Lakes is located on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, right next to the North entrance to FGCU. Monday’s final round will get underway at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
