FORT MYERS, Fla. – After leading the FGCU men’s golf team to a team title at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational this past weekend while claiming co-medalist honors, senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week on Wednesday.
The A-Sun weekly honor is the second of Pena’s career. He earned the award last spring after tying for second at the Rice Intercollegiate.
For the second time in his career, Pena produced three straight under-par rounds in a 54-hole event en route to winning his first individual tournament title. The Clewiston, Fla. product’s career-low 71(-1)-67(-5)-68(-4)/206(-10) extended his streak of consecutive rounds with a counting score to 33. Pena produced 13 birdies and a pair of eagles over the three rounds to finish second in the 68-player field in par 5 scoring (-8).
Pena’s trio of under-par rounds brought his career total to 20, while it was his fifth career top 5 finish. Through six rounds this season, Pena sports a 71.3 stroke average that is fueled by four under-par rounds.
FGCU capitalized on Pena’s performance and under-par tournaments by senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) and freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) to claim its third team title in the last two seasons under head coach Brent Jensen. The Eagles finished at 11-under par, besting programs such as No. 38 Ball State and No. 91 Xavier.
Pena and the rest of the Eagles will head north to Chicago for the John Dallio Memorial hosted by DePaul University this weekend. It will mark the second straight year the Eagles have played in the tournament, finishing second last fall. The tournament will commence with 36 holes on Saturday, Oct. 8 and a final round on Sunday at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club.
