FORT MYERS, Fla. – With team titles in each of its last two tournaments, the FGCU men’s golf team stays in-state for the 10-team Mission Inn Classic hosted by St. John’s in Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla. beginning on Friday.
As a team, the Eagles have been at par or lower in four of their last five rounds en route to winning the Cobra-PUMA Invitational hosted by Xavier and the John Dallio Memorial in Chicago. The recent run of wins has FGCU at No. 82 in the current GolfWeek rankings and No. 83 by Golfstat.
FGCU is the top ranked team in the 10-team field that will take the course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club each day this weekend. The three-day, 54-hole event will tee-off on Friday morning. FGCU will play alongside host St. John’s in the first round, going off the first tee from 8:10 a.m. – 8:42 a.m.
The same starting five that won the John Dallio Memorial two weeks ago will take the course again, led by senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), who has contributed a counting score in 36 consecutive rounds. Currently No. 103 in the early Golfstat Cup standings, Pena has been under-par in six of nine rounds this season, producing a team-low 71.9 stroke average. Pena won the Cobra-PUMA Invitational at the start of October.
Senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) will man the No. 2 spot in the lineup. One of three players to play every round this season, Medinis holds a 74.0 stroke average and is tied for the team lead with a .818 fairways hit percentage. Coming off the best collegiate tournament of his career in his home state of Illinois, junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) will make his third start of the season. English’s 74.7 stroke average is amplified by him playing his last five rounds at a combined one-under. He used back-to-back under-par rounds to close the John Dallio Memorial and finish in a tie for fifth overall.
Both sporting stroke averages below 74.0, underclassmen Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) and Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) each have a top 5 finish this season. Cote’s came most recently at the John Dallio Memorial where he tied for second place after a 69(-3)-72(E)-76/217. Hernandez is off to a fast start to his freshman campaign, contributing a score in all nine rounds with a top 5 and top 20 finish.
