Eagles in Fourth after First Day of Mission Inn Classic
Friday, October 21, 2011

HOWIE-in-the-HILLS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team finished the first day of the Mission Inn Classic hosted by St. John’s in sole possession of fourth place on Friday in the 10-team tournament being held at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.

Tough conditions combined with the daunting par 72, 6,923-yard El Campeon course limited the field’s 50 players to just one under-par round on the day, while no team came close to shooting even-par. FGCU put together a four-man score of 307 to sit eight strokes back of leader Johnson & Wales-Fla. (299).

Bethune-Cookman (304) occupies second place, while Loyola-Maryland sits in third with a 305. Loyola was led by Jon Ross, who fired the lone under-par round of the day with a one-under 71.

Seniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) each led the way for the Eagles with a score of three-over 75 to sit in a four-way tie for seventh place. The counting score is the 37th straight for Pena.

The final two counting scores came from junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) and freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who turned in scores of 78 and 79, respectively. English’s 78 was good enough to place him in the top 20 in 17th place.

FGCU will be back on the course on Saturday morning, taking the first tee from 7:45-8:17 a.m. alongside Loyola-Maryland. Twitter updates about the Eagles during this weekend’s tournament can be found at www.twitter.com/FGCUeagles or on the main page of www.FGCUAthletics.com.
