FGCU Moves into Second at Mission Inn Classic
HOWIE-in-the-HILLS, Fla. – Improving by seven strokes on its first round score, the FGCU men’s golf team also climbed two spots in the standings at the Mission Inn Classic hosted by St. John’s to hold sole possession of second place heading into Sunday’s final round.
Led by a one-over 73 from freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), the Eagles pieced together a team score of 300 for the second-lowest round of the day. FGCU (307-300/607) is just one stroke back of Loyola-Maryland (606) for first place.
Conditions held the 10-team field to no under-par rounds for the second straight day, as Bethune-Cookman (608) occupies third place, Johnson & Whales (609) sits fourth and host St. John’s (613) rounds out the top five.
Hernandez’s 73 was the third-best score of the day, as the local Fort Myers product moved up 10 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 11th place. His 73 followed an opening round 79 for a two-day 150.
Seniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) both sit in the top 10 after the first two rounds. Pena, FGCU’s low man the first day, sits in a tie for fourth place with a 75-74/149. Medinis has put together back-to-back 75s to position himself in a tie for sixth overall.
Junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) supplied the final counting score with his second straight 78. English’s back-to-back 78s put him a tie for 17th place, giving the Eagles four players in the top 20.
FGCU will be back on the course for the final round Sunday morning, taking the first tee from 9:05-9:41 a.m. alongside first place Loyola-Maryland and third place Bethune-Cookman.
