FORT MYERS, Fla. – After ending a very successful Fall season with four consecutive team titles and a top 100 ranking by both Golf Week and Golfstat, the FGCU men’s golf team will open its Spring Championship campaign on Monday morning at the ultra-competitive Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University on the PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.

This year’s 13-team field includes six of Golf Week’s top 100 teams from the final Fall of 2011 rankings, led by fellow Atlantic Sun member North Florida who enters ranked No. 5 in the nation. No. 37 Florida is seeking its third straight team title at the event.

The 54-hole tournament will open with two rounds on Monday, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., and the second round immediately following. The final round begins Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free, with spectator carts available in the clubhouse.

Led by second-year head coach Brent Jensen, FGCU won the Cobra-PUMA Invitational (Xavier), John Dallio Memorial (DePaul), Mission Inn Collegiate Classic (St. John’s) and the Stetson/CFSC Invitational to close out the fall. Over five fall tournaments, FGCU carded five rounds at even-par or lower and an average team score of 293.5.

Senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), who is currently No. 100 in the Golfstat Cup rankings, is coming off a Fall that featured three top 5s and another top 10 out of five events. The Clewiston, Fla. product produced seven under-par rounds, including three straight at the Renaissance Invitational hosted by Xavier in which he tied for medalist honors. All 15 rounds in Pena’s team-low 72.2 stroke average counted towards the team score, stretching his streak of counting scores to 44, dating back to the end of his sophomore season.

Fellow senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) will also tee off is final semester of action on Monday. Another staple in the FGCU lineup, Medinis finished the Fall with consecutive top 5 outings that saw him play his final four rounds at a combined three-under par. Freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) will make his sixth straight start to his collegiate career after putting together a more-than-impressive start in the Fall. Hernandez produced a counting score in all 15 rounds, including four that were under-par, and had three top 10s.
